Bursaries for 2026 Summer Courses in Greek and Latin

February 17, 2026 by George Boys-Stones

The Department of Classics seeks to promote the study of Ancient Greek and Latin by students from groups that are under-represented in the field and to help individuals overcome other obstacles that might prevent them from exploring the fascinating (and fun!) pursuit of learning ancient languages. To this end, we are offering up to 20 bursaries to cover tuition for language courses (at $700 per semester course).

For those visiting from outside the Toronto area who plan to live in residence on campus, requests may be made for up to an additional $1,000 per semester. Please note that all bursaries are administered through the Awards Unit of the Office of the Faculty Registrar and are not disbursed until after the drop deadline in the relevant term.

  • In the first summer term (May—June), we will be offering LAT101, LAT201, GRK101, and GRK 201*.
  • In the second summer term (July—August), we will be offering LAT102, LAT202, GRK102, and GRK202*.

* Note that GRK201 and GRK202 will be offered in an online-synchronous delivery mode.

If you are interested in applying for a bursary, please send by March 20, 2026 a cover letter as well as a copy of your university transcript (an unofficial copy is fine) to the Undergraduate Coordinator, Professor Sarah Murray, at undergrad.classics@utoronto.caYour cover letter should describe the courses in which you plan to enrol and why you are eager to take them. You should also provide a sentence or two explaining why you are a good candidate for the bursary, insofar as its goals of expanding inclusion and helping students overcome obstacles are concerned.

If you are coming from another university in North America or overseas, please see the following link for information about applying and enrolling in courses through Woodsworth College (the online process is straightforward but you will need a Letter of Permission from your own university registrar or study abroad office): https://wdw.utoronto.ca/visiting-students/applyWoodsworth College also has limited accommodation spaces for visiting students; please find information about that through the Woodsworth College website: https://wdw.utoronto.ca/residence/summer-housing
