His publications include philological, textual, and stylistic commentaries on the ninth book of the Thebaid of Statius (Oxford University Press, 1991) and the De Sexto Consulatu Honorii Augusti of Claudian (Oxford University Press, 1996), and contributions to an annotated translation of Vitruvius (Vitruvius. Ten Books on Architecture. Translation by Ingrid D. Rowland. Commentary and Illustrations by Thomas Noble Howe. With additional commentary by Ingrid D. Rowland and Michael J. Dewar. Cambridge University Press. New York, 1999). He is also the author of Leisured Resistance: Villas, Literature, and Politics in the Roman World (Bloomsbury, 2014) and has contributed articles to The Oxford Encyclopaedia of Greece and Rome (Edited by Michael Gagarin. His articles and book-chapters discuss Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, Statius, Claudian, Sidonius Apollinaris, Venantius Fortunatus, Corippus, and the poets associated with the court of Pope Julius II and also such topics as the ‘lost literature’ of the Flavian period in the Wiley Blackwell Companion to the Flavian Age of Imperial Rome. Edited by Andrew Zissos. (Malden, MA, Oxford, and Chichester, 2016).

Before coming to the University of Toronto in 1997 he was Professor of Classics at the University of Calgary.
