Undergraduate Programs in the Classics Department
Students select their Programs/POSts once they have completed their First Year, defined as 4.0 full-course equivalents (FCEs). Students may request enrolment in Programs/POSts using the Student Web Service (SWS). Please note the Important Dates for Enrolment.

NOTE: The Classical Languages program requires courses in Ancient Greek (GRK) and Latin (LAT), and the programs in Classical Civilization do not.
Classical Civilization (Major and Minor)
- Do not require the study of Latin or Greek. Undergraduate students who plan to continue on with advanced study in the field of Classics, including MA and PhD programs in this University, should choose GRK and LAT courses, and programs in Greek, Latin, or Classical Languages (Ancient Greek and Latin).
- This is an open enrolment program. A student who has completed 4.0 credits may enrol in the program any time in the summer preceding their second year.
- Since students in Classical Civilization programs have priority access to 300-level CLA seminar courses, they should make sure they have been accepted into these programs before applying for these courses. Application to courses begins in July for the following Fall and Winter sessions.
Classics / Greek / Latin (Majors and Minors)
- They require primarily courses in GRK and LAT, and 1 FCE in CLA (CLA160 and CLA260).
- This is an open enrolment program. A student who has completed 4.0 credits may enrol in the program any time in the summer preceding their second year.
- No specific courses are required for admission to these programs, but students planning to enrol in them should normally take GRK and/or LAT101 and 102, and in CLA160 in their first year.
Combining Programs
A 4-year Honours BA degree requires the completion of 1 Specialist program, or 2 Major programs, or 1 Major Program and 2 Minor Programs. Students may take two Programs in the Department of Classics (e.g. a GRK major and a LAT major, or a Major in Classical Languages and a Major in Classical Civilization). They may also combine a program from the Department of Classics with a program sponsored by another department.
"Double Counting" Courses
Since CLA160 and CLA260 are required in all programs, students who enrol in two different programs sponsored by the Department of Classics must make sure that they complete a total of 12.0 different full-course equivalents (FCEs) in the two programs combined.
Course Substitutions
Students are permitted the following substitutions in Program sponsored by the Department of Classics:
- Courses in GRK and LAT may be substituted for CLA courses in the Major and Minor programs in Classical Civilization
- Courses in Medieval Latin (SMC222H1, 323H1, 436H1) may be substituted for LAT courses
- Approved courses involving the study of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations taught by other departments may be substituted for CLA courses in the Classical Civilization Programs
- Certain courses in FAH and PHL are accepted automatically. These include the following:
- FAH 206H1, 207H1, 300H1, 303H1, 304H1, 305H1, 309H1, 310H1, 311H1, 312H1, 313H1
- PHL 200Y1, 301H1, 302H1, 303H1, 304H1
- Students combining programs in Classical Civilization with programs in Art or Philosophy will need to complete a total of 12.0 different FCEs (see “Double Counting” above).
- Courses from other departments may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Undergraduate Coordinator, preferably before taking the course. It will help to have a syllabus for the course being considered.
