In November the Classics Department in conjunction with the University's High School Workshop Outreach Program (HWSOP) had the pleasure of welcoming students from two local high schools, Hudson College and Toronto Ouest. In a workshop led by Assistant Professor Drew Davis titled "Latin: Bringing a Dead Language Back to Life," the students were introduced to the Latin language, its history, and its lingering significance in the modern world. Students explored how Latin worked as a language, learned a few key conversational phrases, and examined the politics of translation by analyzing the use of Latin in the hit Netflix show Wednesday. The students then got to compose a new Latin motto of their choosing for their schools to show off to their teachers and friends. The Department is looking forward to offering more outreach workshops to high schools in the winter term.
