Application Deadline: July 31st, 2022

PRACTICES OF COMMENTARY GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP

Value: up to $8,500.

The Practices of Commentary Graduate Student Travel Fellowship supports PhD students who are in the research and writing phase of their dissertation project and for whom a period of residence in Germany is necessary. Applicants will need to establish an affiliation with a researcher affiliated with the Practices of Commentary network and willing to act as a host supervisor; a list of partner researchers may be found on our project website (here). In addition, applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Walid Saleh (Walid.saleh@utoronto.ca) or Dr. Jonathan Brent (Jonathan.brent@mail.utoronto.ca) in order to facilitate an introduction to partner members in Germany. In addition to a research stay in Germany, the fellowship may be used to visit libraries and institutions throughout Europe which are essential for students’ work. However, priority will be given to students intending to do research with members of the Practices of Commentary network at German universities.

These fellowships are intended to help graduate students defray mobility costs related to research essential to their program of study incurred between September 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023. Students may use this fellowship towards costs of travel, accommodation, and subsistence at their intended university. Funds up to the maximum will be released as reimbursements. However, large-ticket items such as flights may be reimbursed before travel commences.

ELIGIBILITY:

Academic: University of Toronto PhD students in good standing from any department, centre, or institute, whose research topic deals with commentary and commentarial practices.

Financial: Applicants must indicate whether they have applied for other funding. Applicants may hold major awards, such as OGS, SSHRC, or Connaught, but cannot concurrently hold other travel grants at the time of travel. Successful applicants must take up fellowship funds and provide all of their receipts by September 30th, 2023.

Application process: Students should send the following by email:

  • (1) a two-page description of your dissertation project and research proposal for your stay in Germany, and on a separate page an itemized list of anticipated expenses connected with the proposed stay in Germany and the SUM TOTAL of the expenses;
  • (2) a brief CV;
  • (3) two letters of recommendation: one from your principal supervisor and one from another University of Toronto professor familiar with your work (referees may e-mail Jonathan Brent [see below] directly from their utoronto.ca address);
  • (4) a written statement regarding the status of the research with respect to Ethics Review requirements (see above);
  • (5) University of Toronto transcript (unofficial copy is fine). Incomplete applications will not be considered.
